Political leaders from across the world condemn the Hamas terror assault that killed at least 100 Israelis and wounded 1,000.
U.S. President Joe Biden called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday, emphasizing that Washington stands alongside Jerusalem and fully supports the Jewish state’s right to self defense in the wake of the deadly Hamas attack from Gaza.
Netanyahu thanked the U.S. president for the unreserved support and made it clear that a “forceful, prolonged campaign” is necessary, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
“We unequivocally condemn the appalling attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israel,” tweeted Secretary of State Antony Blinken. “We stand in solidarity with the people of Israel and extend our condolences for the Israeli lives lost in these attacks.”
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the Pentagon would work “to ensure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself and protect civilians from indiscriminate violence and terrorism.
“Our commitment to Israel’s right to defend itself remains unwavering, and I extend my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this abhorrent attack on civilians,” he said.
Earlier, acting U.S. Ambassador in Jerusalem Stephanie Hallett said she was “sickened by the images coming out of southern Israel of dead and wounded civilians at the hands of terrorists from Gaza. The United States stands with Israel.”
She added, “I condemn the indiscriminate rocket fire by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians. I am in contact with Israeli officials, and fully support Israel’s right to defend itself from such terrorist acts.”
In Europe
Condemnation of the attacks poured in from Europe, as well, which is typically less supportive of Israel.
The head of the European Union’s executive Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, tweeted that the attack “is terrorism in its most despicable form.”
“Israel has the right to defend itself against such heinous attacks,” she added.
In a statement, EU foreign affairs chief said : ‘’The EU condemns in the strongest possible terms the multiple and indiscriminate attacks across Israel by Hamas and deeply deplores the loss of lives.’’
‘’The EU calls for an immediate cessation of these senseless attacks and violence, which will only further increase tensions on the ground and seriously undermine Palestinian people’s aspirations for peace.‘’
‘’The EU stands in solidarity with Israel which has the right to defend itself in line with international law, in the face of such violent and indiscriminate attacks.’’
‘’The EU recalls the importance of working towards a lasting and sustainable peace through reinvigorated efforts in the Middle East Peace Process.’’
The British, French, German and Dutch leaders also condemned the attacks.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was “shocked” by the attacks. “Israel has an absolute right to defend itself,” he tweeted.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the terrorist attacks “shock us deeply,” and that “Germany stands with Israel.”
French President Emmanuel Macron wrote that he “firmly” condemns the terror attacks and expressed his “full solidarity” with the Israeli victims, their families and loved ones.
“Appalling images from Israel,” wrote Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. “The violence must stop; Israel has every right to defend itself.”
Ukraine’s foreign ministry said Saturday that Israel has the right to defend itself from invasion by Hamas terrorists.
Kyiv “strongly condemns the ongoing terrorist attacks against Israel, including rocket attacks against the civilian population in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv,” the country’s foreign ministry tweeted.
“We express our support for #Israel in its right to defend itself and its people,” the statement added.
The Czech Republic and Spain also strongly condemned the attacks. Netanyahu had been scheduled to travel to Prague on Sunday along with senior government ministers.
‘’I condemn the terrorist attack on Israel. My thought are with the innocent victims of the violebce and I wish our friends in Israel the swiftest possible handling of the situation and the fulfilment of their ambitions to live in peace and security,’’ wrote Czech Prime Minister Peter Fiala.
‘’The Czech Republic has always stood and will stand fully witn Israel,’’ he added.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides wrote on X: ‘’I unequivocally condemn the horrifying terrorist attack against Israel from Gaza, resulting in civilian casualties. I personally extend my profound symapathy to everyone affected. Cyprus stands firmly in solidarity with Israel and in support of its right to self-defense.
Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib: ‘’Belgium strongly condemns the massive rocket attacks against Israeli civilians. Violence and terror only perpetuate suffering and hinders the path to diaologue. Our thoughts are with all those affected. We are monitoring the situation closely.
Karl Nehammer, Austrian Chancellor, wrote: ‘’I strongly condemn the terrorist attack by Hamas against Israel and innocent civilianset des civils innocents since this morning. Israel has the right to defend itself against massive attacks. Rockets launched against defenseless civilians is brutal terror and never a mean to find a solution to political problem. For Austria, Israel’s security is non-negotiable.’’
