Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif cancelled a visit with his Austrian counterpart to show displeasure that the Austrian Chancellor had flown the Israeli flag in Vienna.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday thanked several countries for standing with Israel in the conflict with Hamas.
In a tweet, Netanyahu shared the emoticons of flags of all the countries that are supporting Israel and wrote, “Thank you for resolutely standing with Israel and supporting our right to self defense against terrorist attacks,” he tweeted.
He particularly thanked the countries who flew the Israeli flag on their official buildings like Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovenia.
The Israeli flag is flying over the Czech Republic’s Prague Castle upon Czech President Milos Zeman’s orders, to show support for Israel.
A Czech spokesman said the flying of Israel’s flag over the seat of the Czech presidency symbolizes “a sign of unequivocal support and solidarity” between the two countries.
In Vienna, the Austrian Federal Chancellery raised the blue and white flag on official buildings.
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said in a statement: “I condemn with the utmost firmness the attacks against Israel from the Gaza Strip.”
“Israel has the right to defend itself against these attacks. To show our solidarity … we have put up the Israeli flag,” on the chancellery and the foreign ministry, the statement added.
“Nothing justifies the more than 1,000 rockets that Hamas and other terrorist groups have fired up to now at Israel from Gaza,” said Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg. “We strongly support the security of Israel.”

“We regret this and take note of it, but for us, it is as clear as day that when Hamas fires more than 2,000 rockets at civilian targets in Israel then we will not remain silent,” an Austrian foreign minister spokeswoman said.
In Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, the country which will chair the European Union Council of Ministers during the second half of this year, Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa tweeted: ‘’As a sign of solidarity with Israel, the Israeli flag is hoisted on the buildings of the government. We condemn the terrorist attacks and we stand by Israel.’’
Israeli foreign ministry sources quoted by The Times of Israel said that their diplomatic efforts were bearing fruit, especially in Europe and the United States.

The diplomatic officials said that they are closely tracking public declarations made by other countries, and claimed that the general trend was that the statements were moving from even-handed messages calling on both sides to de-escalate to statements placing the onus on Hamas for the violence and affirming Israel’s right to self-defense.
“In the places where international public opinion is made, among the members of the UN Security Council… in the US, the entire American political realm, members of Congress, in the Administration, and in Europe, we are seeing definite movement toward far greater echoing of Israel’s messages,” said a senior foreign ministry official.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi expressed satisfaction with the statements coming out of foreign capitals.
He emphasized that the diplomats must defend Israel’s right to defend itself “in an assertive and unapologetic fashion.”
“The fact that most of the international community supports Israel’s position that it can defend itself is the product of our diplomatic efforts,” he said.
