“Racism and expressions of hatred towards Jews within various fan groups must finally be addressed seriously. There can be no empty words and promises this time,” said the Forum of Jewish Organizations in Antwerp.

Police are investigating videos filmed during last week’s football match between  Belgian clubs Beerschot and Anderlecht and posted on social networks which showed fans of the Antwerp club singing and hurling anti-Semitic slurs outside a café.

The local police in Antwerp have drawn up a report and forwarded it to the public prosecutor’s office.

The incident took place in front of the “Stadion” fan cafe, located right next to the Beerschot stadium in the Antwerp district of Kiel. The images show a small group of 20 people shouting “Hamas, Hamas, Jews to the gas”, in a reference to the gas chambers built by the Nazis to murder millions of Jews during WWII.

The fans also chanted : “My father was in the commandos, my mother was in the SS, together they burned Jews ’cause Jews burn the best.”

In a reaction, the Forum of Jewish Organizations in Antwerp said they learned “with horror” of the images on social networks.

The group expects “an unequivocal condemnation from the soccer world in general, the Pro League and the Beerschot CLUB in particular”.

“Racism and expressions of hatred towards Jews within various fan groups must finally be addressed seriously. There can be no empty words and promises this time,” the Forum insisted.
