BASEL—A window of a Chabad Lubavitch synagogue in Basel was damaged.
According to the Basler Zeintung newspaper, when members of Chabad wanted to pray for Shabbat services in their synagogue, located on Ahornstrasse, on Saturday morning, they made the frightening discovery : a window had been smashed with a hammer overnight.
There are still no suspects, according to local authorities.
According to Rabbi Zalmen Wishedski, Director of of Chabad Lubavitch iin Basel, “I’ve been living in Basel for 16 years. It’s the first time that I have been worried about myself and my family.’’
The incident on the Ahornstrasse is not the first vandal attack against institutions belonging to the Jewish community of Basel. Only a few weeks ago, a series of attacks on the kosher butcher caused a stir. The alleged perpetrator has since been arrested.
Despite the incident, the community organizes this week a public Hanukkah festival on the market square: “We will still be holding the Hanukkah celebration in the market square. The attackers want to intimidate us, but they do not succeed,’’ a spokesperson for the community said.
The City Council has decided to add eight police officers fto provide more protection for Jewish institutions.
