JERUSALEM—-After the U.S. and Guatemala, the President of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes, will open his country’s new embassy
Last month, Cartes announced his intentions to transfer the Paraguay embassy from Herzliya to Jerusalem before the end of his presidential term on August 15. The decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem has been controversial in Paraguay. Another South American nation, Honduras, is also expected to move its embassy to Israel’s capital.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in April that “at least half a dozen” countries were now “seriously discussing” following the US lead, but he did not identify them.
In another development, Netanyahu wrapped up a week of unprecedented diplomatic successes with a return to his roots as an economist: On the heels of the transfer of the American and Guatemalan embassies to Jerusalem, Netanyahu met with Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela and presided over the signing of a free trade agreement that the prime minister said held “phenomenal potential” for both countries.
