“So far, no like-minded countries have taken the decision to suspend existing arms export licences to Israel and I’d add that Israel remains a vital defensive security partner to the UK,” said British Foreign Minister David Cameron.
Britain will not stop arms sales to Israel by British companies despite pressure to do so, British Foreign Minister David Cameron said this week.
During a press conference in Washington with his American counterpart Anthony Blinken, Cameron said that after reviewed the latest legal advice on the matter,’’our position on export licences is unchanged.’’
‘’This is consistent with the advice that I and other ministers have received,” he added.
According to Reuters, Britain supplied 42 million pounds ($53 million) of arms to Israel in 2022.
Cameron said: “Let me be clear, though, we continue to have to have grave concerns around the humanitarian access issue in Gaza, both for the period that was assessed and subsequently.
“So far, no like-minded countries have taken the decision to suspend existing arms export licences to Israel and I’d add that Israel remains a vital defensive security partner to the UK,” he added.
Last week three former senior UK judges joined more than 600 members of the British legal profession in calling for the government to halt arms sales to Israel, saying it could make Britain complicit in ‘’genocide’’ in Gaza.
Some opposition politicians have also called for the government to revoke the export licenses.
