Some reports mentioned that terrorists attacked at least four locations in the Austrian capital: the synagogue, two restaurants and a Jewish community center.

At least seven people are thought to have been killed with several others injured in the gunfire and suicide attack near the synagogue.

According to local reports, hostages are reportedly being held at Akakiko restaurant near the scene of where shots were fired.

One attacker is thought to have ‘blown themselves up’ during the rampage with a a police officer also thought to have been seriously injured.

A large-scale police operation is underway near a synagogue on Schwedenplatz in central Vienna Monday night following gunfire at the site, Austrian police announced.

Oskar Deutsch, the head of the Jewish community in Vienna, said the shooting took place in the street where the city’s main synagogue is located but that it wasn’t clear whether the house of worship had been targeted.

The synagogue was already closed at the time of the shooting, Deutsch tweeted. A neighbouring restaurant was also closed.

Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister said he saw at least one person fire shots at people sitting outside bars in the street below his window.

“They were shooting at least 100 rounds just outside our building,” he said.

Austrian public broadcaster ORF cited witnesses saying several shots had been fired near the synagogue at around 8pm.

Austria’s Interior Ministry said one person has died and several are injured following the incident.

Footage posted on social media showed people scrambling for cover as shots can be heard in the background. A man can be heard shouting while sirens go off while a pedestrian can be seen cowering behind a bike rack. Flashing lights from what appear to be police vehicles can also be seen in the video.
