World Jewish Congress congratulates new Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis, ‘a true ally of Israel’

The new Greek Prime Minister has committed ‘’to strenghten the Israel-Greece ties in the future should the Greek people give me the opportunity of leading my people ;’’ in a speech last year at the American Jewish Committee’s Global Forum in Jerusalem.

Golden Dawn, the extreme-right, anti-immigrant party that had shocked Greek politics by evolving from a marginal, violent neo-Nazi group into Greece’s third-largest party during the country’s economic crisis, was knocked out of Parliament in Sunday’s election.

ATHENS/NEW YORK/JERUSALEM—The World Jewish Congress on Monday welcomed the results of Sunday’s general elections in Greece which resulted in the victory of the  centre-right opposition party New Democracy led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

With most districts counted, outgoing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras admitted defeat to his rival. New Democracy has won 39.85% of the vote, with Tsipras’s leftist Syriza party in second place with 31.53%.

Current projections give New Democracy an outright majority, as the winner receives 50 extra seats in parliament.

World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said Prime Minister Mitsotakis ‘’is a true ally of Israel and has always demonstrated deep support and friendship for the Jewish community in Greece.’’

‘’We look forward to working together with him in the months and years to come, and trust that he will include among his top priorities the serious need to eradicate any and all remnants of antisemitism and neo-Nazi ideology from within the country,” Lauder added.

Golden Dawn, the extreme-right, anti-immigrant party that had shocked Greek politics by evolving from a marginal, violent neo-Nazi group into Greece’s third-largest party during the country’s economic crisis, was knocked out of Parliament in Sunday’s election.

With nearly 95 percent of precincts reporting, Golden Dawn had 2.95% of the votes, just under the 3% threshold needed to win representation in Parliament.

Golden Dawn had 18 lawmakers in the outgoing 300-member Parliament, having won 6.99% of the votes in the last national election, in September 2015.

‘’We are extremely pleased to learn that the far-right Golden Dawn party failed to gain even 3 percent of the vote, in clear evidence that Greek society is fed up with its brand of extremist and hateful nationalism, after more than seven years in parliament,’’ Lauder said.
