UNRWA teachers celebrate October 7 massacre, textbooks linked to attack

The Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se) released Monday a report which documents support for the October 7 massacre among UNRWA teachers and other staff members.

It also reveals evidence of the connection between material taught in UNRWA schools and the atrocities committed on October 7, reflecting years of hate-teaching in these schools.

The report shows that to date, at least 14 teachers and staff at UNRWA schools have publicly celebrated the October 7 massacre and other Hamas attacks on their social media accounts. One UNRWA teacher in the school system in Gaza, Sarah Alderawy, posted a video clip on the day of the massacre showing Hamas terrorists roaming the Israeli streets with rifles while shooting at Israeli cars and rocket attacks in Israel. The video is accompanied by a Quranic verse stating: “we will surely come to them with soldiers that they will be powerless to encounter, and we will surely expel them in humiliation, and they will be debased.”

Mahmoud Abu Adham, an UNRWA employee in Gaza, has posted multiple times since October 7 showing support for the Hamas atrocities. On 10 October, he encouraged Hamas to kill Israeli hostages saying “Do not walk past a captive who has not been given amnesty without striking off his neck so as to terrorize the enemy”, citing Islamic texts that advocate harshness towards the enemy.

Another Gaza-based UNRWA teacher shared on her Facebook page a video last Saturday in which the Hamas massacre is described as the “first real victory” on the way to liberating all of Palestine, while praising the destruction of Israeli communities “with 1000 men in 3 hours” causing “entire cities emptied out in one night”. The video contains videos of Hamas terrorists armed with weapons storming into Israel by foot and gliders, fleeing Israeli party-goers, kidnapping of an Israeli soldier and shooting at Israeli structures. She called on October 23 for God to “destroy the Jews”. This sentence in the Facebook post was deliberately misspelled, perhaps to avoid detection through automated translation given her role as a UN employee.

On October 7, Ranoosh Salah who identifies herself as an UNRWA teacher published a post praising the Hamas massacre as it was taking place, noting with fire emojis that “this is an unforgettable glorious morning”. At noon of the same day Farah Hassan, a social specialist at UNRWA, living in Gaza shared a post praising God for “keeping us alive to witness this day” referring to the Hamas attack.

Today’s report includes details of similar material posted by additional 9 UNRWA staff members in celebration of the 7 October massacre.

The report also documents an official Facebook page belonging to an UNRWA elementary school in Nablus in which a video is posted. It shows a school rally held on 26 October, which features a young boy, accompanied by what seems to be an UNRWA administrator, pleading victory to Hamas’s “Jihad warriors” in Gaza, evoking the defeat of the Jews at Khaybar at the hands of Muhamed’s forces. The student body collectively responds “Amen” to each line. The video also shows students reading from a grade 5 Islamic Education textbook, which contains content inciting to violence and encourages death through Jihad against Israel.

UNRWA teacher living in Gaza, Ebrahim Al Azaiza,  posted a video on Facebook depicting a rocket causing severe damage in Israel. The image is captioned, “What a splendid sight!”
The report includes details of similar material posted by additional 9 UNRWA staff members in celebration of the 7 October massacre.

The report also documents an official Facebook page belonging to an UNRWA elementary school in Nablus in which a video is posted. It shows a school rally held on 26 October, which features a young boy, accompanied by what seems to be an UNRWA administrator, pleading victory to Hamas’s “Jihad warriors” in Gaza, evoking the defeat of the Jews at Khaybar at the hands of Muhamed’s forces. Meanwhile, a handwritten note discovered on the body of a Hamas terrorist who participated in the October 7 massacre cites Khalid ibn al-Walid, an Arab military commander and companion of the Prophet Muhammed, who is widely associated with violent jihad. The note urges to “assail them [Jews/Israelis]” and to “sharpen the blades of your swords […],” encouraging to behead and remove the “hearts and livers” of Israelis.

Students learn in textbooks used in UNRWA schools that al-Walid and Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, the namesake of Hamas’s military wing who promoted Jihad against the British and the Jews are glorified as “heroes” of jihad in a Grade 5 Arabic reading comprehension exercise titled “Hooray for the Heroes.”

Another section of the report documents how IMPACT-se has uncovered that at least one hundred Hamas members who have carried out terror attacks against Israelis over a number of years are graduates of the UNRWA education system.

Analysis of material uploaded to the Hamas website has revealed that they include the perpetrators of the Dee family murders on April 7 and many other Hamas terrorists including suicide bombers. Their education in UNRWA schools are praised. It is statistically probable that the majority of the estimated 3,000 terrorists who committed acts of murder, rape, beheading, and abduction of Israelis on October 7 graduated from UNRWA’s education program and schools, as UNRWA operates the majority of the schools in Gaza.

In a vehicle of one of the terrorists who participated in the massacres against Israeli families on October 7, which was found in Israel, an UNRWA diploma belonging to Amer Yaser Nazmi Sada was found. According to the diploma, it was granted in 2018 upon his graduation of Skilled Level in Smithery Metal works, issued by UNRWA. The diploma was signed by UNRWA’s Chief field education program in Gaza Farid Ajmi‘an Abu ‘Adhira, and the Dean/Principal of the college.
More than 500,000 students study at schools in the Gaza Strip, with over half attending UNRWA-operated schools. These schools teach the Palestinian Authority curriculum which is replete with antisemitism and encourages violence. In addition, UNRWA staff produce harmful material of their own which is also taught in these schools. IMPACT-se reports clearly and consistently show that UNRWA educational materials incite to violence, glorify martyrdom, demonize Israel, and promote antisemitism.

The United States is UNRWA’s largest donor, disbursing almost $1 billion in funds to the UN agency over the last five years, followed by the EU and other countries. These taxpayer funds not only pay for the production of inciteful supplementary teaching materials by UNRWA staff branded with the Agency’s logo and purchasing of textbooks glorifying violent jihad against Jews but they also fund the salaries of UNRWA teachers, who are responsible for teaching them to students
