Two rockets fired from Gaza ahead of Sharon’s state funeral

JERUSALEM (EJP)—Two Kassam rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel just hours ahead of former Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s funeral, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman, Lt-Col Peter Lerner, said.

One of the rockets landed in an open area, causing no injuries or damage and the other failed to cross the border into Israel.

The location in southern Israel where Sharon is to be buried Monday afternoon, the Sycamore Farm in the Negev desert, is located within range of rockets from Gaza and rockets in the past have hit the area.

According to the media, the Iron Dome anti-missile system has been deployed near Sharon’s farm in the Negev desert to protect against rockets during the funeral. But the IDF declined to comment.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says increased police forces have been deployed for Sharon’s funeral.

Along with US Vie President Joe Biden, dignitaries from 17 countries are attending Sharon’s state funeral.
