Spanish Socialist politician resigns after calling her rival ‘Nazi Jew’

Amparo Rubiales, leader of the PSOE in Sevilla,

The wave of protests and denunciations for Ampares Rubiales’ comment not only didn’t make her rectify the tweet against Alias Bendodo but her reply was to criminalise the State of Israel and to reiterate literally: “Bendodo is a Nazi”.

’Calling a Sephardic leader of the opposition a “Nazi Jew” crosses all the lines,’’ said ACOM (Action and Comùmunication on the Middle East), a pro-Israel activist group in Spain.

A regional leader of the governing Socialist party has resigned after calling her rival, a Spanish Jewish politician, from the Conservative party, a ‘’Nazi Jew.’’

Amparo Rubiales, leader of the PSOE in Sevilla,  resigned from office “to settle” the controversy that has arisen after she wrote a tweet in which she called ‘’Nazi Jew’’ the general coordinator of the Partido Popular (Popular Party or PP, center-right), Elías Bendodo.

The PSOE  leadership has demanded a rectification from Rubiales. The wave of protests and denunciations for her comment not only didn’t make her rectify the tweet against Bendodo but her reply was to criminalise the State of Israel and to reiterate literally: “Bendodo is a Nazi”.

Elias Bendodo is the right hand of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the opposition Conservative party and candidate for Prime Minister of Spain.

The PP of Malaga called for the immediate resignation or dismissal of Rubiales, calling the tweet as an insult “fruit of fanaticism not directed only to Bendodo, but to the entire Jewish community.” “Not everything is valid in politics,” said the PP, alluding that “the use of Nazism in these terms may involve the trivialization of this regime,” something that the party finds “unacceptable.”

Bendodo is the right hand of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the opposition Conservative party and candidate for Prime Minister of Spain.

Current Prime Minister is Pedro Sanchez from PSOE who is in a coaltion with the extreme left parties Sumar and Podemos.

’Calling a Sephardic leader of the opposition a “Nazi Jew” crosses all the lines,’’ said ACOM (Action and Comùmunication on the Middle East), a pro-Israel activist group in Spain.

‘’To refer to somebody’s Jewish ethnicity or religion to insult them (the message clearly aimed at offending) is an obvious act of antisemitism: it is in the IHRA (International Holocaust definition, subscribed by Spain. Also, it has all the traces of a hate crime, as it publicly promotes hostility against somebody for several of the reasons under Article 510.1 of the Penal Code,’’ the group said in a statement.
