Polish officials said that they would invite Noa Kirel, Israel’s Eurovision representative, for a visit to learn about Poland firsthand after her controversial comments about the country.

Kirel, who came third in last week’s Eurovision song contest in Liverpool, sparked ccriticism from Polish politicians and media after she said that that the maximum 12 points given by Poland to Israel was ‘’a victory for her family and for the people of Israel.’’

“Receiving full marks from Poland after my family’s past there during the Holocaust was a true moment of victory,” Kirel said in an interview with Israel’s public  broadcaster Kan.

Her comments caused a huge outcry inPoland hat has been on a campaign to “minimize” the country’s role in the murder of Jews on its soil during WWII.

“This is a scandal, Kirel’s words were interpreted as accusing Poland of murdering Jews during World War II,” wrote the Polish news site Dorzeczy.

“Does this statement reflect the level of education about the Holocaust in Israel? Do young people in Israel think the Holocaust was caused by Poland?” tweeted Anna Maria Żukowska, a Polish member of parliament, and addressed to the Israeli embassy in Poland.
