New Mayor of Mexico City is Jewish

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the new elected mayor of Mexico city, recently told a Jewish audience she was connected with the Jewish community thanks to her grandparents, who emigrated from Lithuania and Bulgaria.

MEXICO—Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, a Jewish woman, was elected mayor of Mexico City, a city of almost 9 million inhabitants.   

She is a member of the Movement for National Regeneration Party of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a leftist politician who was elected president on Sunday.

She holds a doctorate in energy engineering and physics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Sheinbaum, 56, holds a doctorate in energy engineering and physics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

She is the first woman ever elected to the post. Her victory is a historic electoral win in a country with deep-rooted problems of gender inequality and violence against women.

She recently told a Jewish audience she was connected with the Jewish community thanks to her grandparents, who emigrated from Lithuania and Bulgaria.

“We celebrated all the Jewish holidays at my grandparents’ house,” she said.

Around 30,000 Jews live in Mexico City.
