In her letter to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Minister Farkash Hacohen wrote that the social media giant should “serve as a place which enables the free flow of ideas and opinions, but not of those which call for violence, antisemitism, or hate speech against a nation or its people.”

The new Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs and Public Diplomacy has written a letter to the CEO of Twitter urging him to suspend ‘’immediately’’ the account of Iran’s Supreme Leader  Ayatollah Ali Khamenei over his antisemitic tweets and incitement to violence.

“Examples of such include Khamenei calling for the ‘elimination’ of the ‘Zionist e ntity’ while asserting the ‘Zionist regime is a deadly, cancerous growth,’ which must ‘be uprooted and destroyed.’ He also compared Israel to the deadly coronavirus, ‘the Zionist regime is a reality that the region must come to terms with. Today the #Covid_19 is a reality; should it be accepted or fought?!… Zionism will be uprooted,’” the letter by Minister Orit Farkash Hacohen to Jack Dorsey reads.

In her letter, she wrote that the social media giant should “serve as a place which enables the free flow of ideas and opinions, but not of those which call for violence, antisemitism, or hate speech against a nation or its people.”

She pointed out that according to Twitter’s own Hateful Conduct Policy, users “may not promote violence against, or directly attack, or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, or religious affiliation” or engage in “calls for mass murder.”

The minister said that Khamenei has used his Twitter account to support Holocaust denial and spread antisemitic conspiracy theories, as well as praise and promote terrorist groups, which Twitter strictly forbids.

Last week, Khamenei shared a poster showing people celebrating at the Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem after apparently capturing it from Israel as a Palestinian flag is raised over the Al-Aqsa Mosque. “Palestine Will Be Free. The final solution: Resistance until referendum,” the text on the poster said.

On Sunday, he again used Twitter to describe Israel as a “cancerous growth,” and said it should be “uprooted and destroyed.”

When she took her office two weeks ago, Minister Farkash Hacohen, who is a lawyer and former chair of the  Electricity Authority, declared: I am entering the Ministry of Strategic Affairs and the National Security Cabinet with the intention of leading the battle on this front. I will act with conviction in the fight against delegitimization and the growing rise of antisemitism.”
