Netanyahu: Erdoğan ‘reiterated’ thanks for Israeli aid after earthquake

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has shown extreme hostility to Israel since the Hamas-led massacre of Oct. 7 in which thousands of Israelis and foreign nationals were killed, wounded and kidnapped, with widespread atrocities documented. Erdoğan in April hosted Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Istanbul, a move that was slammed by Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz, who said that the Turkish president should be “ashamed” of meeting with the terrorist.

The Israeli prime minister congratulated the Turkish president on Monday evening.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke on Monday evening. Netanyahu congratulated Erdoğan on his reelection and the two “agreed to continue strengthening bilateral relations and to bring them to new heights,” per the prime minister’s office.

Erdoğan “reiterated his thanks for the Israeli search and rescue aid following the recent earthquake,” Netanyahu’s office tweeted.

The Israeli leader told Erdoğan “that he is committed to expanding the State of Israel’s circle of peace and to strengthening relations between Israel and Turkey,” the prime minister’s office added.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog congratulated Erdoğan on Sunday.
