Nearly one year after Halle attack against a synagogue, Jewish student attacked in Hamburg

A Jewish student was attacked outside a synagogue in the city of Hamburg, Germany.

According to reports in the German media, a man in military fatigues attacked the 26-year-old Jewish student with a shovel, injuring him seriously in the head.

The synagogue’s security personnel were able to restrain the assailant. He was later t kaken into custody by Hamburg police. The attack came as congregants were in the synagogue celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.

This antisemitic attack comes nearly a year after the deadly shooting attack unfolded on Yom Kippur in the city of Halle.

A far-right activist; Stephan Balliet, 28, is accused of shooting dead two people after he tried and failed to breach the doors of a synagogue where 52 worshippers were celebrating the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

After failing to storm the synagogue, he shot and killed a female passerby and another man at a nearby kebab shop.

Surveys show that antisemitism incidents are on the rise in Germany.
