‘’It was very important to me to seek to address the disgrace of antisemitism in our party as soon as possible,’’ said the new Labour leader after a video meeting with the Jewish leaders who included Board of Deputies of British Jews President Marie van der Zyl, Jewish Leadership Council chairman Jonathan Goldstein, Community Security Trust chairman Gerald Ronson and Jewish Labour Movement chairman Mike Katz.

‘’Keir Starmer has already achieved in four days more than his predecessor in four years in addressing antisemitism within the Labour Party,’’ said Britain’s Jewish leaders after a video meeting with the new leader of the Labour Party and his deputy, Angela Rayner.

Starmer, who was elected this week to replace Jeremy Corbyn,  has vowed to wipe out the ‘stain’ of anti-Semitism from the Labour Party. ’’I will tear out this poison by its roots,’’ he said. ‘

‘’It was very important to me to seek to address the disgrace of antisemitism in our party as soon as possible,’’ he said after the video meeting with the Jewish leaders who included Board of Deputies of British Jews President Marie van der Zyl, Jewish Leadership Council chairman Jonathan Goldstein, Community Security Trust chairman Gerald Ronson and Jewish Labour Movement chairman Mike Katz.

“Today, I repeated once again the apology I made as soon as I was elected leader.Over the last few years, we have failed the Jewish community on antisemitism. Labour is a proudly anti-racist party and, going forward, it will not be enough to ‘pass the test’ on antisemitism. We need to set new standards for best practice,’’ the new Labour leader stated.

Jewish leaders emphasized that they want ‘’to have a normal relationship with Labour whereby we can discuss the full range of issues affecting our community, from religious freedom to Israel, from Jewish schools to poverty, from refugees to the environment – and not just antisemitism.”

“This has certainly been a good start. If the new Labour leadership continues in this way, we can work together to make the changes that will make Labour a proudly anti-racist party once again,’’ they added.

‘’Along with our partners, we look forward to discussions with the new leadership as to how we can all move forward and eradicate the scourge of anti-Jewish bigotry that has infected the Labour Party,’’ said Jonathan Goldstein.
