Israel’s ambassador in Germany condemns German politician who was pictured dancing on the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin

Israel’s ambassador to Germany Ron Prosor has condemned a German far-right politician who was pictured dancing on the Holocaust memorial in Berlin.

A picture of Holger Winterstein,  who is a member of the Alternative for Germany party (AfD), was published on social media after a protest organized by his party on Saturday. It showed Winterstein posing, with his arms outstretched, on top of a stone at the memorial dedicated to the memory of Jews killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

“Mr. Winterstein, everyone is watching you dance while you bring shame on yourself and your party. Enjoy your shameful minute of fame because your name will soon be forgotten,” Israel’s ambassador wrote on Twitter.

AfD said it would take action against the politician due to his “extremely disrespectful behavior.”

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin, inaugurated in 2005, 60 years after the end of WWII,  is a memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, designed by architect Peter Eisenman and Buro Happold.

Located one block south of the Brandenburg Gate, in the Mitte neighborhood, it  consists of a 19,000-square-metre (200,000 sq ft) site covered with 2,711 concrete slabs or “stelae“, arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field.

An attached underground “Place of Information” holds the names of approximately 3 million Jewish Holocaust victims, obtained from Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.
