Israel’s government plans to increase the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial museum’s funding by nearly 30 million shekels ($9.6 million) in the coming year, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced on Sunday. The state will also direct additional resources to the fight against BDS, he added.

“This week we will mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day,” said Bennett in his opening remarks to Sunday’s Cabinet session. “While the entire world has an obligation to remember and deal with the significance of the Holocaust, a tragedy that is unparalleled in the annals of human history, the main obligation is cast on us, the Jewish people and the State of Israel,” he added.

“Therefore, the government will increase the state’s participation in the budget of Yad Vashem by approximately NIS 30 million in the coming year.”

International Holocaust Remembrance Day falls on Jan. 27, which this year marks 77 years since the Auschwitz extermination camp was liberated.

In addition, said Bennett, in the aftermath of the Texas hostage crisis and amid reports of increasing anti-Semitism worldwide, the government is expected to direct additional resources toward the fight against BDS.

“Contemporary antisemitism comes in many guises,” said Bennett. “Today, this energy of Jew-hatred is frequently directed at the state of the Jews. Our obligation as the State of Israel is to expose it, even when it is disguised, and fight it.”
