Hungary sole EU member state to oppose humanitarian pause in Gaza war

EU flags fly in front of the European Commission headquarters in Brussels.

26 countries asked for such humanitarian cause and asked the Israeli government not to take military action in Rafah,

Hungary was the only EU member state to oppose a call for an immediate humanitarian pause in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The 26 other member states called for such a pause, said EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell Monday afeter a meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers to discuss the situation in the Middle East.

Israel launched a military operation in Gaza following the October 7 massacres committed by Hamas in southern Israel. More than 1200 people were killed in the terrorist attacks by the  Islamist group which is on the EU list of terror groups.

The 26 EU countries agreed on a statement requiring ‘’ an immediate humanitarian pause that would lead to a sustainable ceasefire, to the unconditional release of hostages, and to the provision of humanitarian assistance.”

‘’For the rest, it is basically the same statement, where we ask the Israeli government not to take military action in Rafah, because that would worsen an already catastrophic humanitarian situation and prevent the urgently needed provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance,’’ Borrell told reporters.
