German Chancellor Merkel to visit Auschwitz for the first time

The Chancellor has already visited other Nazi camps, including Dachau and Buchenwald, as well as four times the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and museum in Jerusalem.

BERLIN—German Chancellor Angela Merkel plans to make her first  visit to the  former extermination camp of Auschwitz, according to a report in daily  Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The trip is scheduled for December 6, the newspaper said. The Chancellor accepted the invitation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of its  existence.

Merkel will participate in a commemoration ceremony and visit both the main camp and the Birkenau camp.

The Chancellor has already visited other Nazi camps, including Dachau and Buchenwald, as well as four times the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and museum in Jerusalem.

Among her predecessors, two had visited Auschwitz :Helmut Schmidt in 1977 and Helmut Kohl in 1989 and 1995.
