German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Israel at the end of the month before she steps down after 16 years at the head of her country.

During her three-day visit, she is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett for the first time since he took office in June. She will also lay a wreath at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, and meet with President Isaac Herzog and Foreign Minister and Alternate Prime Minister Yair Lapid.

Bennett had invited Merkel to visit Israel in June during a congratulatory call on his taking office. “Germany and Israel are linked by a unique friendship that we want to deepen further. With this in mind, I look forward to working closely with you,” Merkel told Bennett during the call.

Merkel’s last visit in Israel was in October 2018.

General elections will take place in Germany on September 26 to elect a new Bundestag, the federal parliament, including the Chancellor to succeed Merkel.
