German Chancellor Angela Merkel calls to congratulate Netanyahu on his election victory

Merkel’s office said she insisted on the continued relevance of a two-state solution, saying that should be the goal of international efforts. She stressed her willingness to work closely and trustingly with the incoming Israeli government.

JERUSALEM—German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called to congratulate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his election victory and to invite him to meet in Berlin after forming a government, said the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser.

Netanyahu thanked Chancellor Merkel for her warm greetings and commended the relations between the two countries.

According to Merkel’s office, the German Chancellor stressed the need to work toward a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

During the final stretch of his election campaign, Netanyahu pledged for the first time to annex parts of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) in a bid to rally his right-wing base.
