Asked in 2014 about the French singer and actor Patrick Bruel, Jean-Marie Le Pen referred to his Jewish origins with a pun evoking the Holocaust – “I’m not surprised. Listen, next time we’ll do a whole oven batch!”

Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of Frace’s extreme-right party National Front went on trial this week over once again inciting antisemitic hatred.

The trial stems from a 2014 video on the party’s website in which Le Pen railed against artists who denounced his extremist stances, including Madonna and the French tennis star-turned-singer Yannick Noah.

Asked about the French singer and actor Patrick Bruel, Le Pen referred to his Jewish origins with a pun evoking the Holocaust – “I’m not surprised. Listen, next time we’ll do a whole oven batch!”

His comments sparked a torrent of indignation including from leaders of his own party, with Marine Le Pen, his daughter who today heads the party,  criticising what she called a “political error”. She later expelled her father from the party.

Judges said they will announce their verdict on Oct. 29.

93-year-old Jean-Marie Le Pen has a string of hate speech convictions, including for contesting crimes against humanity for saying several times that the gas chambers used to kill Jews were only a ”detail” of history.
