Talks to revive Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers have been on hold since March, chiefly over Tehran’s insistence that Washington remove the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)  from the U.S. list of designated terrorist organizations.

‘’I am very happy  that we will resume the talks on the JCPOA in the coming days,’’said EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Friday at a press conference in Tehran with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, in a reference to the 2015 nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

“The coming days means the coming days. I mean quickly, immediately. And so, we are going to break this stalemate and stop this escalation process in which we were,’’ Borrell said.

Borrell and his deputy Enrique Mora arrived in Tehran late on Friday and met Amirabdollahian and chief nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani on Saturday. Borrell was also scheduled to have a meeting with Iran’s security chief Ali Shamkhani later on Saturday.

Borrell said: ‘’My visit has one main objective: it was to break the current dynamic of escalation and to break the stalemate of the negotiations of the JCPOA. It was of paramount importance to give a new momentum to bring the JCPOA on track.’’

The EU top diplomat also said that his visit will be followed by the resumption of negotiations between Iran and the United States  facilitated by the EU ‘’to try to solve the last outstanding issues.’’

He stressed that in an environment marked by the war in Ukraijne, ‘’the world needs security and stability. And the world will be a much secure place if we have a deal that can ensure for Iran full benefits, full economic benefits of the agreement, and at the same time to address the concerns of the international community about non-proliferation, global security and regional stability.
