BRUSSELS —‘’I would never have thought that during my lifetime Jews would be afraid to practice their faith in Europe. I am deeply worried,’’ said European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in a statement issued ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January which marks the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp 74 years ago.

‘’It saddens me that nearly 40% of them are considering leaving Europe and that Holocaust denial is still alive in Europe,’’ he added, in a reference to the results of a survey by the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) on the perception of antisemitism among Jews in 12 EU countries.

‘’One in three Europeans declares to know ‘just a little’ about the Holocaust and one out of 20 has never heard of it,’’ Juncker said.

‘’Ignorance is dangerous. As time goes on and memories fade, it is our moral duty, more than ever, to remember. We cannot change history but we can make sure that future generations do not witness this intolerable horror again,’’ the European Commission President said.

He said the EU ‘’will not tolerate any form of Antisemitism from everyday hate speech, offline and online, to physical attacks.’’
