EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell in Beirut to discuss situation on Israel-Lebanon border

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell will discuss all aspects of the situation in and around Gaza, including its impact on the region and especially the situation at the Israeli-Lebanese border.

”The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy will also discuss the importance of avoiding regional escalation and of sustaining the flow of humanitarian assistance to civilians, which the European Union has quadrupled to €100 million,” says the EU external service.

 

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell travelled to Lebanon on Friday to discuss all aspects of the situation in and around Gaza, including its impact on the region and especially the situation at the Israeli-Lebanese border, the EU’s external service said.

In Beirut, he will also discuss the importance of avoiding regional escalation and of sustaining the flow of humanitarian assistance to civilians, which the European Union has quadrupled to €100 million.

During his visit, Borrell will meet with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Abdallah Bou Habib and Lebanese Armed Forces Commander General Joseph Aoun.

He will also have an exchange with the Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) General Aroldo Lazaro.

According to the EEAS statement, the EU High Representative ‘’will reemphasize the need to advance diplomatic efforts with regional leaders with a view to creating the conditions to reach a just and lasting peace between Israel, Palestine and in the region.’’
