Denmark seeks new EU sanctions against Iran after foiled plot to assassinate opposition leader on Danish soil

Danish Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen told a press conference on Tuesday : “It is the Iranian government, it is the Iranian state that is behind the plot.’’

COPENHAGEN—Denmark is seeking new EU sanctions against Iran after an Iranian government intelligence service had tried to carry out a plot to kill an Iranian Arab opposition figure on Danish soil.

Danish Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen told a press conference on Tuesday : “It is the Iranian government, it is the Iranian state that is behind the plot.’’

He added that he was consulting with “partners and allies”, including the EU, about possible sanctions.

He also said his country would recall the Danish ambassador in Tehran for consultations.  Samuelsen and Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen called the alleged plot ‘’totally unacceptable.”

A massive police operation in Denmark last month linked to the case led to the bridge to Sweden being closed.

A Norwegian with Iranian roots had been arrested over the thwarted attack in Ringsted on September 28.

The target is believed to have been the Danish leader of al-Ahvaziya, a group that seeks independence for Khuzestan province in western Iran.

According to a report by Israel’s radio KAN Bet, the Mossad provided Denmark with information that thwarted the plot and led to the arrest of the suspect.

The Mossad was also responsible for providing information to French authorities in June about a plan to attack a meeting of Iranian opposition figures near Paris.
