According to the Israeli military, IDF forces had come under “massive fire” during a counter-terror raid in the Jenin refugee camp, and had returned fire. Raids were also conducted in the nearby village of Burqin and other locations in Judea and Samaria on Wednesday, the military said in a statement.

“The possibility that journalists were hit, possibly by Palestinian gunmen, is being examined,” the statement continued. “The incident is being examined.”

“According to the information we have gathered, it appears likely that armed Palestinians — who were firing indiscriminately at the time — were responsible for the unfortunate death of the journalist,’’ said Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett in a statement following the death of Al-Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu-Aqla.

She was killed in Jenin on Wednesday during an exchange of fire between the Israel Defense Forces and Palestinian gunmen, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. The military is investigating the incident.

‘’Palestinians in Jenin were even filmed boasting “We hit a soldier; he’s lying on the ground”. However, no IDF soldier was injured, which increases the possibility that Palestinian terrorists were the ones who shot the journalist,’’ Bennett said.

Israel has called on the Palestinians to conduct a joint pathological analysis and investigation, which would be based on all of the existing documentation and findings, in order to get to the truth. So far, the Palestinians have refused this offer.

‘’IDF forces will continue their counterterrorism operations, in order to end the deadly wave of terror and restore security to the citizens of Israel,’’ said Bennett.

There were no casualties among Israeli forces.

According to the Qatar-based media citing the Palestinian Health Ministry,  Shireen Abu Akleh “was hit by a live bullet on Wednesday while covering Israeli raids in the city of Jenin and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition,”. The Al Jazeera report claimed she had been shot in the head, and cited the Palestinian Health Ministry as blaming Israeli forces for her death.

Jenin has been the scene of intensive Israeli counter-terror operations in March and April, following a wave of deadly terrorist attacks that killed    17 Israelis.
