Belgium summons Israel’s ambassador over alleged destruction of Belgian offices in Gaza

Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib:  ''I expressed my concern, the fact that such destruction feeds the narrative that the Israeli army indiscriminately targets civilian buildings, which is contrary to international law.''

The ambassador, Idit Rosenzweig-Abu, said that  she knew nothing about the latest events. “We don’t know yet what happened. We don’t know if it was an Israeli attack, if there was a tunnel or if there were explosives in the building. We don’t have any information at the moment, we’re looking into it,” she said.

Belgium on Friday  summoned Israel’s ambassador over the alleged bombing of the country’s development agency in Gaza, the Belgian foreign ministry announced.

Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib and Cooperation Minister Caroline Gennez summoned Israel’s ambassador to Belgium, Idit Rosenzweig-Abu, ‘’to denounce the bombing and destruction of the offices of Enabel, the Belgian development agency, in Gaza.’’ The offices were located in a six-storey tower in Gaza City, in the north of the Gaza Strip.

“The destruction of civilian infrastructure is absolutely unacceptable and does not comply with international law,” the foreign ministry said in a statement after the meeting. “Since the first day of the conflict, Belgium has called on all parties to respect international law,” the statement added.

The Israeli ambassador said afterwards that  she knew nothing about the latest events. “We don’t know yet what happened. We don’t know if it was an Israeli attack, if there was a tunnel or if there were explosives in the building. We don’t have any information at the moment, we’re looking into it,” she said.

Rosenzweig-Abu points out that her government is currently conducting investigations. “As soon as we have this information, we will share it (with the Belgian authorities, ed. note)”, she assured us.

The Belgian Foreign Minister called for the matter to be fully investigated, especially as the GPS coordinates of the building had been communicated to the Israeli authorities. “They knew very well that Enabel’s premises were located in this building.  I therefore expressed my concern, the fact that such destruction feeds the narrative that the Israeli army indiscriminately targets civilian buildings, which is contrary to international law”, she said.

Since the beginning of the Israeli military operation in Gaza which followed the October 7 atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists in southern Israel, Belgium has been one of the most vocal critic of Israel among EU member states.
