‘Belgian Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès has always strongly condemned any antisemitic speech’

On June 28, anti-Israel demonstrators in Brussels called for war against the Jews.

Several complaints have been filled after demonstrators at a pro-Palestinian rally in Brussels two weeks ago called for a war against the Jews.

Around 500 people, some waving Palestinian flags, had rallied on June 28 around Place du Trône, close to the King’s Palace, to denounce plans to apply Israeli sovereignty to parts of the West Bank. They called for a boycott of Israel and the implementation of international sanctions against the country.

The rally was organized by the  Belgian-Palestinian Association.

But a video shared on Twitter showed a group of demonstrators shouting the slogan “Khaybar, khaybar, Ya ya’ud, jaysh Muhammad sawfa ya’ud (“Khaybar, Khaybar oh Jews, the army of Muhammad will return.”).

This slogan, which refers to a symbol of Muslim domination over the Jews, had led  to a criminal conviction, confirmed on appeal, for similar acts in Antwerp in 2014.

Asked for a reaction, Belgian Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès noted that following the  complaints the file is in the hands of justice. ‘’We respect its work,’’ her spokesperson, Steve Detry,  told European Jewish Press. He added:  ‘’That said, the Prime Minister has always strongly condemned any anti-Semitic speech and, more generally, all hate speech.’’
