As part of its 2021 programme, the EU Commission announces a ‘comprehensive’ strategy on the fight against antisemitism

The European Commission has announced that it will present a comprehensive strategy on combating antisemitism.

As part of its work programme for 2021 presented to the other EU institutions, the Commission, which is the EU’s executive branch, said: ‘’Given the rise in antisemitic violence and hate crime, the Commission will present a comprehensive strategy on combating antisemitism, to complement and support Member States’ efforts.’’

This strategy is part of the Commission’s strategy to promote the ‘’European way of life.’’

Addressing last month an online conference on the fight against antisemitism organized by the German EU Council presidency, European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas declared that ‘’antisemitism is not just a Jewish problem. It is not just a local problem. It is a European, and a global issue.’’

Schinas, who is in charge of the EU Commission fight against antisemitism, stressed that ‘’antisemitism has no place in the European Union.’’ ‘’Together with the German Presidency of the Council, we are stepping up our efforts to ensure the safety of Jewish communities, counter the surge of antisemitic conspiracy myths online and invest in education, awareness-raising and research,’’ he said.

He noted that the fight for normality of Jewish life ‘’requires concerted efforts by all European Institutions and all Members States. It is a litmus test for Europe, in upholding our values and our diversity.’’
