‘Antisemitism is a fuse that must not be allowed to burn,’ says Pope Francis in Budapest

Pope Francis: “The threat of antisemitism is still lurking in Europe and elsewhere.”

“Antisemitism is a fuse that must not be allowed to burn,’’ said Pope Francis as he addressed a meeting of Christian and Jewish leaders in Budapest.

‘’The best way to defuse it is to work together, positively, and to promote fraternity,” he added, deploring that ‘’the threat of antisemitism is still lurking in Europe and elsewhere.’’

Francis’s remarks came during a brief trip to Hungary, a stop on his four-day visit to central Europe, during which he met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

More than half a million Jews from Hungary were killed during the Holocaust.

The country is currently home to the largest Jewish community in central Europe, with around 100,000 Jews living in the country
