After three elections, Netanyahu and Gantz finally sign agreement to form unity government

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz, leader of the Kachol Lavan (Blue and White) party have signed on Monday an agreement to form a unity government, after three elections and 17 months of election campaigns and coalition negotiations.

The Jerusalem Post reported that the signing came shortly after Blue and White and the Likud party issued a joint statement revealing that Gantz and Netanyahu will be meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence.

The agreement will allow the Likud leader to remain Prime Minister for one year and a half, after which he’ll be replaced by Blue and White chairman as part of rotation deal to be bound in law.

The agreement came as Israel will solemnly mark Monday evening and Tuesday Yom HaShoah, the  annual Holocaust Remembrance Day, though all events and ceremonies have been moved online due to the pandemic.

The annual ceremony at the Yad Vashem memorial has been pre-recorded.

In lieu of in-person survivor testimony, the museum is directing Israelis to peruse its digital resources on the Holocaust and many Israelis are expected to attend videoconference testimonies later in the evening.
