Slovenia recognition of a Palestinian state: parliament committee suspends decision, President cast doubt on such recognition

Slovenia President Borut Pahor cast doubt over recognition of a Palestinian state at this stage.

LJUBLJANA—The Slovenian Parliament’s foreign affairs committee has suspended a debate on whether to recognize a ‘’state of Palestine.’’

The committee was to vote on a draft resolution with the backing of Slovenia Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec before it passes to the parliament for a full vote.

According to officials, the foreign affairs committee suspended its session pending an official government position. The committee will then meet again on the government proposal before the final vote in the plenary, which is expected in March or April.

On Friday, Slovenia’s president Borut Pahor cast doubt on his country recognising Palestine.

He was quoted as saying he  would only back the recognition of a Palestinian state “in circumstances that would contribute to the solution of its bilateral issues with Israel but not to the worsening of relations”.

‘’For the moment, those circumstances are not in place, he said.

The Slovenian Minister Foreign Minister has said a recognition ‘’would strengthen Palestine’s negotiation in the Middle East peace process”.

Until now, among the 28 EU member states, only Sweden recognized a Palestinian state.
