BRUSSELS—The European Union does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, an EU spokesperson said Friday in response to a statement on Twitter by U.S. President Donald Trump that it was ‘’time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights.’’
‘‘The EU stance did not change. The EU, under the international law, does not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the territories occupied by it since July 1967,’’ said EU foreign affairs spokesperson Maja Kocijancic, specifying that this area includes the Golan Heights.
Towards the end of the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel captured the Golan from the attacking Syrian army. In 1981, Israel’s Knesset voted to apply Israeli law to the Golan Heights, but stopped short of formally annexing it.
