BRUSSELS—The newly elected president of the European Parliament David Sassoli decided to pay tribute to all victims of terrorism in Europe in his first public act last week in Brussels.
“We must pay tribute to the victims in the capital of Europe. We must commemorate the European citizens who were victims of these attacks. This is a tribute to all the victims of terrorism. I wanted to start my time as President with this symbolic act.”, said Sassoli at a ceremony on Friday at the entrance of a metro station in Brussels where a terrorist attack took place in March 2016.
He added : “We have to unite in our fight against terrorism and we must remain resolute in this fight.”
A member of the centre-left Alliance of Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament (S&D) and a former journalist, 63-year-old Sassoli succeeded last week his compatriot Antonio Tajani.
