“The Western Wall is the holiest place for the Jewish people, and I decided to call the train station that leads to it after President Trump following his historical and brave decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel,” said Katz.
The “Donald John Trump, Western Wall” station is part of a proposal to add two underground stations to the high-speed rail link between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, to be opened in spring next year. If approved, the underground link will take four years to be build at a cost of $700 million, according to the transport ministry.
The proposal is the “most important national project in the Transportation Ministry,” Katz said. The station would allow visitors to reach “the beating heart of the Jewish people: the Western Wall and the Temple Mount.”
President Trump has announced that the United States would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini called the announcement “very worrying,” arguing that it damaged diplomatic efforts.
