| Bern's Albert Einstein exhibition
|
|
BERN (EJP) - An exhibition celebrating the work of the scientist, humanist and liberal pacifist Albert Einstein, which was originally opened in 2005, has been extended until October 2006 due to massive popularity.
Because of his Swiss connections, the German-born Einstein is almost considered an adopted son of the country. It was as an employee of the Swiss Patent Office in Bern in 1905 that he completed the Theory of Relativity and his famous equation E =mc2.
Einstein’s part in atomic research had always caused him great anguish and he has been quoted as saying that had he foreseen theoutcome he would have stayed in Switzerland and become a watchmaker.
Nomadic life
The Historical Museum in Bern conjures up Einstein’s life (1879 -1955) through personal objects, letters, works of art and video installations . The biographical details of his life describe an almost nomadic existence. He was born in Ulm ,Germany and died in Princeton, US. He was largely educated in Switzerland, lived in Italy, became a professor in Prague and travelled widely as a media celebrity, an activity he revelled in.
Einstein received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1921.
He also left the largest part of his writings to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem which has played a significant role in the mounting of this largest exhibition of its kind in the world.
Much of the above is shown in detail in the Museum along with the invitation to Einstein from the State of Israel to become President. He refused the honour with due humility stating his lack of political experience and advanced age.
Extraordinary footage
The video films of David Ben-Gurion, first prime minister of the state of Israel, visiting the great scientist in Princeton are both moving and exhilarating.
The scientific films of the cosmos are quite extraordinary and even non-scientifically inclined visitors will find a great deal of beauty in the giant video installations of the planets.
All in all the exhibition not only celebrates the life of a great man but illustrates Three quarters of a century of world history.
Families can also participate in the activities of the "Physics Park" and enjoy hands on activities in the open air.
Albert Einstein Exhibition, Historisches Museum Bern, Switzerland.
Until 15 October 2006.
