BRUSSELS (EJP)---A Member of the European Parliament from Bulgaria was awarded with a unique medal by the leaders of the European Jewish Union (EJU) in Brussels.
Dr. Antonyia Parvanova received the medal “for her exemplary and leading role in the European Parliament in supporting Israel, fighting anti-Semitism as well as promoting tolerance and civil society values,” said the European Jewish Union.
The medal is a limited edition of a handcrafted Menorah, symbol of Jewish resilience and continuity. A similar medal was awarded last year to former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar.
"'Dr Antonyia Parvanova is a true friend not only of European Jewry, but of all those who believe in a better future for Europe," said Tomer Orni, EJU’s Chief Executive Officer, who presented the award together with EJU Vice President Vadim Rabinovich, during the General Assembly of the European Jewish Parliament (EJP) which took place recently in Brussels.
He added: "Europe is experiencing financial and political unrest, which leads unfortunately again to the rise of extremism and anti-Semitism. Dr. Antoniya Parvanova's leadership in confronting these worrying phenomena should be set as an example to our fellow European leaders".
MEP Antoniya Parvanova was elected in 2005 as a Member of the European Parliament and became Vice-President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).
