PARIS (EJP)---French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Wednesday night for the release of Gilad Shalit, the 20-year-old Israeli soldier kidnapped two years ago by Palestinians near the Gaza Strip.

Shalit has also French citizenship.

In an interview with Infolive.tv, Noam Shalit said he is positive President Sarkozy will act to free his son, and said he will consider traveling to the upcoming Mediterranean Union conference in Paris, to remind the world that Gilad is still held in captivity.

arkozy made the televised appeal at the Elysée presidential palace after announcing that Ingrid Betancourt, a former Colombian presidential candidate who was held hostage by leftist guerrillas since 2002, has been freed during a rescue operation of the Colombian army.
"My last words are for soldier Gilad Shalit and for his parents. We do not forget him," Sarkozy said at the end of his televised message.

The president added that France "is always ready to enlist in the battle for a man held unjustly."

During his recent visit to Israel, Sarkozy met with Gilad Shalit’s parents.
