LONDON (EJP)--- Danny Shek, chief executive of the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre (BICOM), a pro-Israel British lobby group, is to become the new Israeli ambassador to France, it was announced Thursday in London.
Shek, a former journalist, was formerly the chief spokesman and director of the press division of Israel’s ministry.
He then went on to become head of the ministry’s European division, before taking up the BICOM post in the autumn of 2004.
The appointment came as a surprise to both Shek and BICOM.
Shek made himself the announcement on Thursday night at BICOM’s annual summer reception.

The event, held at the House of Lords, was hosted by Baroness Margaret Wall. Guest of honour was Eyal Arad, a senior political strategist for Kadima, the governing political party in Israel.
BICOM is an independent organisation devoted to creating a better understanding of Israel in the UK.
They provide briefings, analysis and in-depth research and organise and deliver visitor programmes for key politicians, academics and journalists.
“Beyond the day-to-day criticisms of what Israel does, people are beginning to take aim at what Israel is,” Shek said in a recent interview with the Jewish Chronicle.
Shek, whose wife is French, is scheduled to take up his new position in September.
Since the departure last year of the former ambassador to Paris, Nissim Zvili, the embassy was headed by a chargé d’affaires ad interim, Raphael Barak.
