BRUSSELS (EJP)---The European Jewish Parliament and the European Jewish Union (EJU) expressed outrage at the announcement "Welcome to this train for Auschwitz. All Jews are asked to get off at Buchenwald" made over the loudspeaker of a train in Belgium. The incident took place on Thursday on a line linking the city of Namur to Brussels.
"The European Jewish Parliament and the European Jewish Union appreciate the immediate reaction of the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB) "strongly condemning these actions" and note the transport company's press secretary's statement that the announcement was not made by a member of its staff."
"Two weeks ago we marched in Auschwitz where thousands of Jews were murdered on a daily basis. We will never accept such remarks, not in Europe nor anywhere else," said Tomer Orni, EJU CEO and a UK member of the European Jewish Parliament.
"In view of the seriousness of such statement made in public, which trivializes anti-Semitism, and the irreparable damage to the image of SNCB, EJP and EJU invite the instigation of legal proceedings against the offending party and call the Belgian government to condemn this act and fight against the rising anti-Semitism in the country," the two Jewish organizations said.
